Meet Bill
I am a father of two girls: I am determined to make the world a better place for their tomorrow.
I am a New Mexican: As Highland Highschool graduate who attended both UNM and NMSU, I grew up learning sensiblilities unique to New Mexico.
Before embarking on this journey, I dedicated over twenty-two years to the military, serving as both an Army officer specializing in Latin America foreign relations and military intelligence, as well as an enlisted cavalry scout. Hailing from New Mexico, I proudly represented Highland High as a Hornet in various state competitions, delving into academic decathlon, soccer, track, and chorus. Following my academic pursuits at UNM and NMSU, where I studied computers and mathematics respectively, I went on to earn a master’s degree at Vanderbilt University in Latin American Studies. Beyond the realm of politics, my interests include tabletop games, Star Wars, and astrophysics. Despite my outward portrayal as a tough military soldier, I must confess that I'm truly a geek at heart, likely influenced by my childhood fascination with G.I. Joe.
I firmly believe that dreams can materialize when paired with unwavering focus and hard work. Right now, Senate District 19 is in dire need of a State Senator who is dedicated to the constituents and willing to put in the hard work. Together, we can make New Mexico a safer and more prosperous place.
Let's address the concerning issue of crime. Presently, New Mexico holds the unenviable position of having the second highest violent crime rate in the country, with property crime numbers surpassing national averages. While the state boasts 146 law enforcement agencies with close to 5,000 police officers, it's evident that simply having personnel in uniform isn't a complete solution to ensuring community safety. We need to develop the tools that ensure everyone feels valued and supported through parenting interventions, family interventions, well being campaigns, and early childhood education. Our focus must shift towards preventing the conditions that lead individuals into violent or criminal behavior. Swift accountability is the most effective deterrent for criminal behavior, and we need a State Senator who comprehends the necessity for a comprehensive plan to make New Mexico safer.
The impact of crime on our economy cannot be understated. Businesses flee high crime areas, and without a reduction in violence, investment will remain elusive. Lower-income communities, irrespective of race, are disproportionately affected by violence and overall crime, a fact substantiated by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The emphasis on poverty can be misleading, and it's imperative that we address economic inequality to effectively reduce crime and violence in the long run. We need State Senators who will combat white-collar crimes, advocate for universal, affordable high-quality childcare, encourage business growth in New Mexico, narrow the gap between top and bottom earnings, and reestablish the link between economic prosperity and wages.
This is not a mere dream; it's a reality that we can collectively create. That's why I'm reaching out to you for support.
- Please, contribute where you can: first and foremost, vote. Encourage your friends and neighbors to vote as well. Consider bringing them to one of our events, so they can be part of our movement. Host an event, and I would be honored to speak to your interests.
- Unfortunately, reaching the rural constituents of the district is a challenge without adequate funds. This is why I'm asking for your contribution, no matter the amount. Whether it's $10 or $50, your support can help us secure the seat.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me. My name is Bill Scott, and I'm running for the State Senate to create a safer and more prosperous New Mexico. Your support is invaluable.
